Devlog 1 - Self Study 1

Self Study 1

In week 1 we were tasked in creating a simple barrel to demonstate basic knowledge for using blender to create an object.
I already have decent experience with using Blender

I decided to create a neon barrel that could potentially be apart of a cyberpunk or futuristic themed game.

Heres an image of the neon barrel. Nothing fancy, just a simple render in cycles.

The blue and pink colours are emissive materials with bloom turned on within the Eevee renderer. I could have put more time on this model and made the final render a lot cleaner, but I just rushed this one out.

We were also tasked with finding an object to model that you would find in a tourist attraction. I picked the Salamanca Market, and specifically some wooden spatulas in a container found at a wooden arts n crafts store.

Spatuas sold at the Salamanca Market in woodcrafts stall.

Render of the the spatulas and container (Redone because I lost the original .blend file)

Material setup for the container.

I'm combining the "Kitchen Utensils" text with the base color to display the text after the object has had its UV's unwrapped.
I then use a noise texture and color ramp node plugged into the roughness, to give the container a used look.

Close-up of the container to show off the roughness.

Material setup for the spatulas (All spatulas are the same except for the colour)

The musgrave plugged into the noise texture give a stetched wood grain look. That is plugged into the color ramp node, converts the grayscale colours into the wood colours that you see in the final render.

Conclusion
I didn't struggle at all with this as I have decent knowledge with using Blender. I definitely still need to work more with UV's, applying textures, and messing around with materials, but other than that, I pickup 3D modelling fairly quickly. Outside of Blender, I generally lack in creative skills, i.e, coming up with my own ideas on what to model, but that will only come with time thought.
